See Your Enemy: Cypress Ranch Mustangs

Week 11: Cypress Woods Wildcats vs. Cypress Ranch Mustangs
7:00 PM Friday, November 4, 2016
Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union Stadium
Previously on Cy Woods Football...

The Wildcats suffered the ignominy of setting a a new record for losses in a season, falling to Cy Creek 24-23 after Luis Reyes' 39-yard field goal attempt went wide to the left with eight seconds remaining.

Jack Barrientez ran for 111 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and also caught four passes for 63 yards and a touchdown. Collin Fewox had an outstanding night on defense with 15 tackles and an interception.

This year's iteration of the Battle of 290 features two squads heading in opposite directions. While Cy Ranch is preparing for the playoffs, Cy Woods will be wrapping up its season on Friday night.

Well, it is still a rivalry game, even though the fortunes of these two teams are in different strata. On a rivalry pitting two Division II schools in South Dakota, Ryan Nanni of SB Nation wrote: "Rivalry history only matters for 364 days a year. The day of the game is different." Time to write the next chapter in the book.

2¢ on Ranch

Since their run to state in 2014, the Cypress Ranch Mustangs have firmly established themselves as the kings of the mountain known as Cy-Fair ISD football. No doubt, this is a team with serious title aspirations.

To go undefeated in this district is not an easy task. To go undefeated in this district two years in a row is completely unheard of.... until possibly now. In District 17-6A's current configuration, no team has finished with an undefeated record in district play in two consecutive seasons. Cy Ranch has a chance to do exactly that on Friday night. The fact that they are in this position is a testament to that program, and the willingness that they have shown to become better in all aspects of the program.

The one thing that has impressed me most about Ranch this year is how mentally tough they are. On the rare occasions in which they are tied or trailing in games, they just keep grinding away. They just play their game, regardless of what the scoreboard says. They make few mistakes, and they punish their opponents for their miscues.

Blake Nevins is at the controls of the Mustang offense, and he is also their starting point guard in basketball. If I am not mistaken, he has not committed a single turnover this year. No interceptions, no fumbles lost... he has done his job.

E.J. Thompson, once again, is their workhorse back. He's a tank who will consistently chew up five, six, seven yards a play. Holden Gourley is the home-run threat. The two of them will be running behind an imposing offensive line led by Cole Blanton and Samir Martula. Blanton is one of the top offensive linemen in the country in the class of 2018. The Mustangs have literally run over their opponents this year; as a team, they have rushed for over 200 yards in all but two games this season.

R.J. Sneed and Keric Wheatfall haven't put up eye-popping numbers this season, but they are still integral players in that offense, and they have burned the Cats quite a bit in the last two years.

The secondary was thought to be a question mark for Cy Ranch entering the season, but most of those concerns seem to be quelled. Rance McInnis is just a sophomore, but he has been one of the breakout stars of the district as a shutdown safety. His partner in the defensive backfield, Alex O'Connor, is a sure tackler who has really built on a promising sophomore season. Shemar Bartholomew and Ryan Fields have really come into their own as the season has progressed at the cornerback spots.

The Mustangs' front seven is one of the best in the city and arguably the state. Harrison Loveless is the anchor of their defensive line, while Amaud Willis-Dalton does it all; he leads the Mustangs in sacks and has also returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. Lawson Pyles, Daniel Whitmire, and Deondrick Montgomery round out an outstanding quartet of linebackers.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

The Mustangs got the jump on the Wildcats, storming out to a 27-6 halftime lead. Woods managed to mount up a response in the second half, but that deficit was simply too much to overcome, and the Mustangs came out on top 44-25, giving them a winning streak for the first time in the Battle of 290.

On Homecoming, the Wildcats fell to Cy-Fair by a final of 35-17. This loss ensured that Cy Woods will finish with a losing season for just the second time in school history and also eliminated the Wildcats from playoff contention. Jack Barrientez ran for 96 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, but he failed to record a catch for the first time this season.

Now, all the Wildcats have left to play for is pride.

2¢ on Creek

The Cougars are loaded with skill players, but a suspect defense has befallen them in 2016.

Mateo Renteria has put up outstanding numbers, but his abysmal yards per carry figure comes from having to play the role that guys like Luke Allen and Chuckie Keeton played before him. Renteria is a great pocket passer, and that's where his talents are best utilized. Miles Battle is one of the top receivers in the state and is flirting with a 1,000-yard season. When his career at Creek is done, he may very well be the best skill player that the school has ever produced.

Kaleb O'Bryant, Mason Biggers, Jack Hook, and Caleb Horn are all players cut from the same mold, as they can all hurt opposing defenses with their versatility. Hook and Horn lead the Cougars in rushing, while Biggers and O'Bryant are threats in the return game. Hook is also second on the team in receiving yards and touchdowns, and Horn is second in receptions. Geonardo Sutton has become a key cog of this potent offense as a sophomore, and he'll be another youngster to watch in the coming years.

Jacari Tatum and Jowell Aponte are three-year starters on the line. Derek Craft leads the linebackers; he had a strong sophomore campaign in 2015 and currently leads the Cougars in tackles. He and Dakwa Davis are disruptive forces on the outside.

Ladarius Anthony is a part of a deep secondary, leading Creek with three interceptions. Eric Harris is a hard hitter. Alberto Walford has had a fine first season as one of the Cougars' key reserves. He's just a sophomore, while Harris and Anthony are juniors, so Creek's secondary has some legit talent. This is a physical group with some really solid tacklers; Harris ranks third on the team in tackles, while Trevis Earls, Nick Burns, and Anthony are all right behind him.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

The Cougars got the jump on the Wildcats with a 24-7 lead after the first quarter. However, Woods mounted a valiant and furious fourht-quarter rally that fell just short when a last-gasp heave from Jacob Kainer was picked off by Chance Steverson, preserving a 40-35 Creek victory. Jordan Johnson had 157 yards on six receptions and two touchdowns, one of which went for 94 yards, the longest play from scrimmage in Cy Woods history.

Previously on Cy Woods Football...

The Wildcats got themselves off the mat, topping Cy Lakes 36-33 to snap a four-game losing streak. Jack Barrientez accounted for 165 yards of offense and scored three touchdowns, and Jacob Kainer threw for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Myles Wilson had 13 tackles, and Collin Fewox had 11; Collin also secured the win with an interception.

It's Homecoming at the Woods! It's also the first game in a rather tough stretch to end the year; the Cats will take on the other three playoff teams from 2015 to close out this campaign, and in order for them to make the playoffs, they'll need to win all three of these games and have a bunch of results from around the district to go their way. So far, I'm not seeing any scenarios that will result in Cy Woods making the playoffs. Isn't it fun when you don't control your destiny?

2¢ on Fair

Ah... Cy Woods' original rivals. Although Cy-Fair disdain has taken a backseat to Cy Ranch disdain, this game has always had an emotionally charged atmosphere, because, in case you have forgotten, Cy Woods originally consisted of kids who would have gone to Cy-Fair (I was in that group) and sophomores who attended Cy-Fair, but lived in the new Cy Woods attendance zone.

It's been a while, but I haven't forgotten the fact that Cy-Fair accused Cy Woods of being copycats and stealing their tradition when they first met on the football field.

With the Bobcats, you pretty much know what they will do on offense. On the other hand, trying to stop them is an entirely different story since they are so effective at what they do. Cam Arnold has been an effective signal-caller and has provided some balance to the Bobcats' offensive attack, and he has two legit weapons in B.J. Chambers and Brock Wright. Chambers really caught my eye during 7-on-7 season as he hauled in literally everything that was thrown his way. Brock Wright is headed to Notre Dame and is essentially Rob Gronkowski 2.0. Christian Richmond hasn't featured much in the offense yet, but this sophomore has shined in the return game and, well... you've probably already seen this punt return, but here it is again. He'll be one to watch in the coming years.

Let's be real though... Cy-Fair has always prided itself on its run game, and they have yet another fine running back in Trent Kennedy, who seized the starting job as a sophomore, and now as a junior, he's become one of the top offensive players in the district. Blake Faecher, who is also known for his baseball prowess, will also feature in the running game, and Jaelon Woods is another sophomore who's also waiting in the wings. Paving the way for the Bobcat running backs is an imposing offensive line led by the LSU-bound Austin Deculus, who has started every game since he was a sophomore.

Cy-Fair still had the best defense in District 17-6A last season despite having to replace some marquee names. These kids definitely made a name for themselves last season. Now, they're all one year older, and once again, they are the district's best defense in terms of both yardage allowed and points allowed. The Bobcats have solid players at every level of their defense. Hunter Adams, Derrick Jackson, and Arnold Crayton man the trenches. Dylan Higgins and Kyle Allison lead the linebackers. Jace Bobo shared the district's Defensive Newcomer of the Year award with Cy Ridge lineman D'Juan Matthews last year. Patrick Atkinson has also emerged as a playmaker, and Allison is a super-utility player of sorts; he can line up anywhere in the Bobcat defense.

Erick Hallett is a hawk in the secondary and has also returned a punt for a touchdown this year. While Hallett is the hawk, Kyle Cervenka is the headhunter. He and Higgins both lead the Bobcats in tackles this season. Taylor Gray, who was last year's starting quarterback, has made a seamless transition to the secondary and leads them with three interceptions. Zach Nelson is also another utility-type player who can play any of the secondary spots.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

In one of the more shocking results in 17-6A last season, the Wildcats totally dominated the Bobcats in all facets of the game and cruised to a 44-7 victory. Cy Woods winning may not have been a massive surprise, but the manner in which they won was definitely the story. Jack Barrientez caught six passes, including his first touchdown at the varsity level, for 95 yards, and C.J. Jones ran for 180 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.

The Wildcats lost 27-10 to Cy Falls, giving the Eagles their first win of the season and the Wildcats their fourth consecutive loss, which ties a rather undesirable record. Matt Ficalora caught a 32-yard touchdown pass for the only Cy Woods touchdown.

Now, the Cats will have to contend with a Cy Lakes program that looks to be finally getting themselves off the ground after six torturous seasons.

At this point, I just hope that the kids just play hard. That's really all I'm expecting from here on out.

2¢ on Lakes

For better or for worse, the path of the Cy Lakes football program will always be tied to Cy Ranch's path in some way, shape, or form. Both of these schools began competing in varsity football in 2010, and while Ranch has turned into one of the state's top programs, it has been infinitely rougher sailing for Lakes, a team that entered this season with just five wins in six seasons.

In 2016, however, Spartan football has become one of the feel-good stories in the early going of this year in Cy-Fair ISD athletics, and one of the chapters in this story involves snapping a 22-game losing streak in district play dating back to the end of the 2013 season.

You may be tempted to scoff at the fact that this is the first time that Cy Lakes has won more than one football game in a season, or that this feel-good story involves a team that still has a losing record on the season. If you are thinking about scoffing... please don't. One could probably argue that Cy Lakes should be a .500 team right now. Personally, I've found myself rooting for them a little bit this year, because a good Cy Lakes team simply makes this district better.

Whatever Coach Patton is preaching to his team, they are all in on his philosophy, and day by day, they are changing the perception of Cy Lakes football. By all accounts, they're not content with winning just two games. Although, realistically, a playoff spot may be out of reach for 2016, they could mount a legitimate challenge for one as soon as next season.

Tyrese Miller, a left-hander, saw some playing time as a sophomore last year. Now, he has taken the reins of the offense as the #1 quarterback. Colin King and Ted Solomon, who were the previous two starting quarterbacks, still play integral roles in the Spartan attack. King, a three-year letterman, has shown off his versatility at all of the offensive skill positions. Solomon has formed a solid tandem with Nate Green at the receiver spots, which also features a deep threat in Breggs. Solomon also doubles as the punter, and he is second in the district in average yards per punt.

Brenden Lemon, who was the Spartans' only non-honorable mention All-District pick (he was a 2nd-team selection) last season, is one of five players in the district with three interceptions. He leads a secondary that also includes Julian Hall, who has two picks of his own, D'Andre David, and Braelon Herman, a three-year starter. Frank Reed and Al'qwaylon Fils lead a linebacking corps with pretty good depth; Allen Moreira, Tyler Dudley, Emmanuel Iruru, and Jude Keelen will also feature at the second level of the Spartan defense.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

It was a happy homecoming for the Wildcats as they stormed out to a 42-6 lead after the first quarter and strolled to a 70-20 victory. Jared Taylor caught three passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns, and C.J. Jones ran for a touchdown and caught another touchdown.

2¢ on Falls

One year after they were the last Cy-Fair ISD team standing, the Eagles are in danger of being the first team eliminated from playoff contention. This is a matchup pitting the district's worst offense (Cy Falls) and the worst defense (Cy Woods) against one another, so something's got to give...

The Eagles' defense has definitely been their strength this season, and they have standouts at all three levels. Cordell Ijoma and Kory Toliver are imposing presences in the trenches. Blake Thompson set the Cy Falls single-season record for tackles last season, and he is arguably the face of Cy Falls' defensive unit. He'll be joined by Bikacic and Tommy Dinh, among others. Davion Morris, a three-year letterman, is the leader of the Eagles secondary; he and Cy Ranch's Rance McInnis currently lead the district with three interceptions apiece.

On the other hand, Cy Falls has a brand-new cast of characters on offense, and they have yet to score 100 points on the season. They have to replace two 1,000-yard rushers (Desmond Hite and Shannon Vaughns), a three-year starter at quarterback (Casey Rosellini), and a three-year starter at cornerback and wide receiver (Jorren Pollard). In addition, they also lost their offensive coordinator.

T.J. Goodwin has shown flashes, but he's enduring growing pains as a sophomore. To replace Hite and Vaughns, the Eagles have a three-back rotation of Christian Anderson, Chhay Hok, and Jordan Ramos. Hok is also the team's leading receiver. Starrland Baldwin can make an impact anywhere on the field, whether on offense, defense, or the return game.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

Desmond Hite and Shannon Vaughns went on a rampage in a 57-20 Cy Falls victory. They both ran for well over 100 yards with three touchdowns, and Hite also caught a touchdown pass. That is probably all you really needed to know about this game.

Previously on Cy Woods Football...

On Saturday, in the 100th game in school history, the Wildcats squandered a 31-17 halftime lead to Jersey Village, who flipped the script by outscoring them 41-15 in the second half to come away with a 58-46 victory. Jacob Kainer finished 22-31 for 333 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 123 yards and three scores. Jack Barrientez caught seven passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Myles Wilson recorded five tackles and recovered two fumbles, returning them (or one of them) for a total of 42 yards.

No doubt, they let that game get away. However, a short week gives them a chance to get back to work and minimize the time spent wallowing over the loss. The Wildcats will kick off Week 6 with a crucial matchup against a Langham Creek squad that is currently in a three-way tie at 2-1. This will be a chance for them to close out the first half of their schedule on a positive note, and also a chance for them to muddle up the early playoff picture in District 17-6A.

2¢ on Langham Creek

Langham Creek entered 2015 as the defending district champions, and they had the talent to repeat as champions. Unfortunately... an 0-4 start destroyed those ambitions, and even though they went 5-1 in their final six games, the damage from that awful start was too much for them to overcome.

Since Coach Thompson has taken over, the Lobos' reputation has been built on an explosive offense; guys like the Juergens brothers (okay, they were in the previous era), Conner Feist, Dominique Harris, Quartney Davis, and a host of others have put up gaudy numbers in their frenetic system.

The centerpiece of this offense is Toneil Carter, a four-year letterman, one of the most coveted high school football players in the country, and the face of Langham Creek football. Toneil enters the week a mere 9th in rushing yards, but there's no denying that he is a truly special talent who can carry this team to a victory if need be. The Lobos have a platoon at quarterback with Kacey Pryor and Jacob Walls. Pryor was a defensive back last season and is the runner, while Walls is more of a packet passer. Both have been efficient in throwing the ball; Pryor has yet to throw an interception in 44 attempts this season. The platoon isn't necessarily performance-based, because the two of them have made the most of their opportunities.

Langham has had a solid pipeline of wide receivers, and the torch has been passed to Chase McCray and Praise Okorie. McCray leads the district in receptions and is third in receiving yards, while Okorie is fourth in receiving yards and third in yards per reception among players with more than 20 catches.

The Langham defense enters this matchup allowing the third-fewest yards per game, and Coach Thompson is extremely high on this unit, especially along the defensive line. Ogbonnaya provides an imposing presence, and Salazar has really come on as a playmaker in the trenches. David Eggleton leads a deep linebacker corps, and he'll team up with Brad Pinkerton, Jermaine Wright, and an emerging sophomore in Corien Azema.

The Lobos lead the district with six interceptions. Azema, Eggleton, and Pinkerton all have one, and Jordan Murray, their quarterback in the secondary, is one of six players in the district with two picks. Noah McGee, Darren Woodson, and Paul Darks round out a talented secondary.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

In a game featuring two teams with dwindling playoff hopes, the Wildcats kept theirs alive with a 48-33 victory, breaking a three-game losing streak to the Lobos.

Bryson Powers ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to Jordan Johnson. C.J. Jones ran for 174 yards and two touchdowns and also returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown.

Despite leading Cy Ridge 13-8 at halftime with just 26 yards of total offense, it was only a matter of time before Cy Woods' lackluster offensive performance came back to haunt them. The Rams outscored the Wildcats 28-8 in the second half, which included a 21-0 fourth quarter, to come away with a 36-21 victory on Saturday at Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union Stadium.

Cy Woods was outgained 552-202 on offense, and the offensive woes eventually became too much for the defense to overcome. Semaj Trahan returned an interception 86 yards for a touchdown, while Jacob Kainer ran for 68 yards and a touchdown. Jacob also threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Jack Barrientez in the third quarter.

Now, the Wildcats will move on to their final Saturday game of the regular season. This will be the 100th game in Cy Woods football history.

2¢ on Jersey Village

After coming up one game away from a playoff berth for two consecutive seasons, the Falcons crashed to the bottom of the standings in 2015. They have had a rough beginning to their 2016 campaign, but this is a team that has had the Wildcats' number in recent seasons. Jersey Village has beaten Cy Woods three years in a row, mainly due to the efforts of Deshun Qualls, who is now at Abilene Christian.

The Falcons, much like the Wildcats, are breaking in a brand-new cast of characters on the offensive side of the ball. Rokeem Paul and Austin Lynch, the district's most productive wide receiver tandem in 2015, have also moved on. Qualls also led the team in rushing, and their top running back, Anthony Ajao, transferred to Alief Hastings.

Alec Wechsler is now at the controls of the Falcon offense, and while he's not the dynamic threat that Qualls was, he's probably a better passer than Qualls. Wechsler enters the week in with 778 passing yards and nine touchdowns; only Cy Creek's Mateo Renteria leads him in those categories. Jordan Jones, a sophomore, has emerged as the Falcons' #1 receiver. Blake Johnson and John Gilbert have also become reliable targets for Wechsler. Kendon Flowers, a transfer from Clear Falls, has made an impact in his first season with the Falcons; he is their leading rusher and is also a threat in the return game.

Defense had been one of the Falcons' strengths, but one of the biggest reasons as to why they finished 2-8 in 2015 was the severe regression that they suffered on defense; they allowed 414 points last season after giving up just 399 in the previous two seasons combined. Jersey Village brings back an experienced group of linebackers led by Jacob Clarkson, Emerald Blueitt, and Victor Abrego, while Greyson Newton anchors the defensive line.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

In a game that we may not see for another decade, maybe even longer, Deshun Qualls did things that I'm pretty sure not even Kyler Murray did in a single night, and both teams re-wrote Cy-Fair ISD's record book. Even now, when I think about that game, I am still in utter disbelief. Not even outstanding individual performances from C.J. Jones, who set a Cy Woods single-game record with 346 rushing yards, and Jordan Johnson, who had 200 receiving yards, and Josh Marvin, a seldom-used linebacker who recorded two sacks and an interception after getting pressed into duty, were enough to keep the Wildcats' playoff hopes alive, because Qualls was simply in another realm that night.

In a game where both teams combined for 1,643 yards of offense, Jersey Village prevailed 74-73, effectively eliminating Cy Woods from playoff contention.

Sub-Varsity Game Information

The junior varsity games will take place at Cy Woods, while the freshmen will play at Pridgeon, because the track and the playing field at Jersey Village is undergoing renovations. Game times, as always, are at 5 and 7.

Week 4: Cy Woods Wildcats vs. Cy Ridge Rams

Previously on Cy Woods Football...

The Wildcats started off District 17-6A play on the right foot by blowing away Cy Springs 69-34 in the new-look Pridgeon Stadium on Friday. Jacob Kainer accounted for seven touchdowns in the win, throwing for 241 yards and four touchdowns while adding 133 yards and three scores on the ground. Jack Barrientez caught four passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Next up for Cy Woods... a very intriguing early-season matchup against a resurgent Cy Ridge squad.

The Enemy: Cypress Ridge Rams

After edging Morton Ranch 35-30 in their season opener, the Rams dominated Jersey Village in all facets of the game on Saturday, cruising to a 60-28 victory.

2¢ on Ridge

After the Rams took the first two meetings between these two schools, Cy Woods has won five of the last six meetings to seize control of the series.

In 2014, the Rams posted their worst record ever. That year, they underwent a massive youth movement, in which players like Trelon Smith, Kevin LeDee, TyRae Thornton, Kobe House, and James Froehlich, who were all sophomores that season, were pressed into feature roles.

Although Ridge also missed the playoffs in 2015, they proved to be a tough out for the district's playoff representatives, and they also came away with three of the district's four individual accolades; Smith was named the district's Offensive MVP, while Lucky Jeffery, who has since moved on to Lamar, was chosen as Defensive MVP. In addition, D'Juan Matthews shared Defensive Newcomer of the Year honors with Cy-Fair's Jace Bobo.

Now, it's 2016. The sophomores who took their lumps in 2014 are now seniors, and they are looking to return the favor to the rest of the district.

Smith, an Arizona State commit (Go Devils) is probably one of the five best players in the entire district. He has picked up right where he left off in 2015, leading the district in rushing and scoring in the early going. Smith has enjoyed playing against the Wildcats in the past; he returned a kickoff for a touchdown as a sophomore and scored three touchdowns in the first quarter last year. Alex Jacobs has also been an effective second option in the running game. Kevin LeDee has firmly entrenched himself as the Rams' #1 receiver, and his blend of size and speed gives him the advantage in any matchup. Tyson Williams has waited for his turn to operate the Rams offense, and he has been excellent; he was 14-15 against the Falcons last week.

Cy Ridge's defense, year after year, has featured some truly talented players, and this year is no different. The Rams boast a veteran secondary that features TyRae Thornton, Kobe House, James Froehlich, Zac Lancaster, and Chavous Gwynn. Thornton, a Rice commit, was a third-team selection on Dave Campbell's Texas Football's Super Team in the preseason and has turned himself into a shutdown corner, while Froehlich led them in interceptions a year ago. D'Juan Matthews, like his former teammates Kamari Staton and Lucky Jeffery, is a disruptive, high-motor player in the trenches. McDade and Sham, who has also played tight end in his career, lead the linebackers.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

Trelon Smith tore the Wildcats apart in the first quarter, single-handedly giving the Rams a 21-7 lead after the opening 12 minutes. Woods wound up turning the tables by outscoring Ridge 52-10 over the final three quarters on their way to a 59-31 victory. Bryson Powers threw for five touchdowns, three of which went to C.J. Jones, who recorded 110 receiving yards. Kason Franklin returned an interception 96 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Sub-Varsity Game Information

The freshmen will play at Cy Woods, while the JV will play at Cy Ridge. I believe that Ridge is only fielding one JV team. Game times are 5 and 7.

Know Your Enemy: Cypress Springs Panthers

Week 3: Cy Woods Wildcats @ Cy Springs Panthers
7:00 PM, Friday, September 9, 2016
Pridgeon Stadium

Previously on Cy Woods Football...

The Wildcats were soundly trounced 42-14 on Opening Night by Klein Collins. The 120 yards of offense that they recorded was the second-lowest amount in a single game in team history. Jack Barrientez was one of the few bright spots on what was otherwise a rough Saturday for the Cats, rushing for 55 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

And now, the real season begins. The Wildcats will open up district play against the team they beat in the 2015 season finale. Cy Woods and Cy Springs have typically met in the middle of the season, or at the end, but this will be the first time that they will play each other in September.

The Enemy: Cypress Springs Panthers

2015 record: 3-7, 2-7 (t-8th) in District 17-6A
Did not qualify for playoffs

The Panthers began their 2016 campaign with a 55-42 victory over Conroe. James Brooks and Taye Barber both ran for three touchdowns; Barber, who ran for 190 yards, also completed seven of his 17 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns.

Players to Watch

QB Taye Barber, RB James Brooks, WR/DB Jah'marea Sheread, WR O'Shae Clark, OL/DL Marcus Royal, DL Kolbi Lewis, DB Leon O'Neal, LB Jared Simon

2¢ on Springs

The Panthers have been regarded as a sleeping giant, but two straight 3-7 seasons following two years of improving win totals may have stagnated their momentum somewhat. Springs is still loaded with tremendous upside, but moral victories don't guarantee a playoff berth. In order to end the district's longest active playoff drought, they will have to, well... actually win the games. One thing is for sure, though... these are not the Cy Springs Panthers who routinely brought up the rear in Cy-Fair ISD football.

The Panthers' offensive attack all starts with Taye Barber. Apparently, he was not at full strength last year, and yet, he still put up outstanding numbers as a sophomore. (How was he not the Offensive Newcomer of the Year, again?) Barber's skill set is highly reminiscent of D'Eriq King, the former Manvel standout who is now at Houston. Donell Dunn and Drake Carter may have moved on, but he still has proven weapons out wide with O'Shae Clark and Jah'marea Sheread, who may also see some time in the secondary. Marcus Royal is a three-year starter who will play on both sides of the line.

Springs' struggles last season could be partially attributed to Barber having to carry them on offense nearly every week. James Brooks scored three touchdowns on the ground against Conroe, so his emergence will really take some of the burden off of Barber.

Although Springs won two weeks ago, they still gave up 42 points, and a significant portion of the damage that Conroe inflicted against them came on the ground. Last season, the Panthers were the worst team in 17-6A against the run, and no team in 17-6A allowed more points than they did. For the first game, at least, their run defense was once again a weak point. That's not to say that the Panther defense is devoid of talent; Royal will be joined by Kolbi Lewis, who possesses an imposing presence in the trenches. Leon O'Neal racked up 14 tackles from his safety spot against the Tigers, and Simon will lead the Panthers' linebacker corps. No doubt, they will be looking to tighten up on that side of the ball in order to give Barber more chances to operate.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

In the 2015 season finale for both squads, the Wildcats outscored the Panthers 22-6 in the final quarter and came away with a 49-39 victory on a rainy November afternoon. C.J. Jones spent the majority of this game at quarterback and only completed four of his ten pass attempts, but he recorded 155 yards on those four completions, and three of them resulted in touchdowns. In addition, he also ran for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

If you're missing Wildcat football, don't fret... Thursday will provide an opportunity for you to catch the future stars of the Cy Woods Wildcats.

2¢ on Cy Park

Well... there's not really much information to go on with regards to players to watch for on the other side; after all, this is their first game. Park is opening with just freshmen that would have been attending Lakes or Springs.

Greg Rogers, who was the offensive coordinator at Cy Falls, is the first head coach in Cy Park's history. Coach Rogers was the architect of the Eagles' wing-T attack and the change proved to be devastatingly effective; Desmond Hite and Shannon Vaughns both had 1,000-yard seasons, both of them averaged over 9 yards per carry, they combined to score 34 touchdowns (Hite 19, Vaughns 15), and Cy Falls was the last Cy-Fair ISD team standing in the playoffs. I would imagine that the havoc that Hite and Vaughns wreaked in 2015 is what Coach Rogers is envisioning for his Tigers...

Cue the music... Cy Woods football has returned!

Previously on Cy Woods Football...

The Wildcats closed out the 2015 season with a 49-39 victory over Cy Springs. However, the win was not enough to propel them into the playoffs; Cy-Fair's victory over Jersey Village in their final game ensured that Cy Woods would miss the playoffs for the second time in school history.

Players to Watch

QB Bryson Powers, WR Quinton Newton, RB Zach Skrehot, RB Luis Barba, OL Dante Bivens, OL Charlie Steinhauer, LB Jonathon Bucio, LB Donavan Mutin, DL Grayson Strawn, DB Aaron Buckley

2¢ on Klein Collins

The Tigers come in as one of the top programs in Region II. They came out as pretty big winners in realignment; the Spring Branch schools have replaced Montgomery and the Spring ISD schools in District 15-6A.

Collins will have to replace their outstanding running back, Justin Pratt, but they'll have a solid stable of running backs to call upon, including Barba and Skrehot. Their starting quarterback is a familiar face: Bryson Powers transferred to Collins after spending two years at Cy Woods, and he's an ideal fit for that smash-mouth offense. They'll really benefit from his toughness. Newton and Owens will give Bryson a couple of threats out wide.

The defense will be led by Bucio, a sparkplug at linebacker. He'll be joined by an emerging talent in Mutin. Grayson Strawn will hold down the fort in the trenches. They'll have to replace some key pieces in the secondary; Aaron Buckley will be counted on to provide leadership.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

The Wildcats and Tigers kicked off the 2015 season at Reliant Stadium, and it was an absolute bloodbath. Klein Collins had their way all day and cruised to a 62-21 victory. Tre' Hart was one of the few bright spots on the day for Cy Woods; he caught 5 passes for 128 yards and had a 56-yard touchdown catch in the 3rd quarter.

Sub-varsity Game Information

Most sub-varsity games, as always, will be played on Thursday. The freshmen will play at Klein Collins, while the JV plays at Cy Woods.

2016 Season Preview

In February, I posted a look ahead to the 2016 season, from a Cy Woods perspective: who would be returning for the Wildcats, who are some new faces that could contribute, and what issues they would be facing. With the new season just around the corner, I wanted to compose another preview post, this time with a look at the rest of the district.

The talent in Cy-Fair ISD seems to get better and better every year. The great thing about this is that the talent seems to be spread all across the district, and no school consistently overpowers all the others. CFISD has sent football players to Division I schools in the past, but never at a rate like this. Although players like Toneil Carter, Brock Wright, R.J. Sneed, Trelon Smith et al. are not Wildcats, these four are all major Division I prospects, and they all play in Cy-Fair ISD, District 17-6A. Sure, there are many more heralded players all around Texas, but if you put all 32 6A districts in the state together, I would say that 17-6A would be in the top tier in terms of overall talent. Players like Carter, Sneed, Wright, Smith, and C.J. Jones are why every game in this district is a must-see.

There are very few districts in Texas, Class 6A or otherwise, that has as much parity as District 17-6A. Very few districts can match the competition level that CFISD provides week in and week out, and this parity makes for some truly compelling storylines, because district play is essentially the season here. The margin for error is razor-thin, and one mistake will definitely open the door for another team to sneak in.

District 17-6A at a glance

District 17-6A, which comprises the high schools of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, has existed in its current configuration since 2010, when Cy Ranch and Cy Lakes played their inaugural varsity seasons. This will be the final realignment cycle where CFISD will be a 10-team district; in 2018, Cy Park and Bridgeland will join the fray in time for the next realignment. Per UIL regulations, this will require the district to be split, as the maximum amount of teams in a UIL district is 10.

Most playoff appearances: Cy-Fair, 17 entering 2016 season
Fewest playoff appearances: Cy Lakes, has never made playoffs

Best playoff run by a CFISD school: State runner-up (two times), Cy Ranch (2014) and Cy Falls (2006)
Best playoff run by a CFISD school in 2015: Cy Falls, Division I regional semifinalists, lost 28-21 to North Shore

Longest active playoff appearance streak: Cy-Fair, 6 (streak began in 2010)
Longest active playoff drought: Cy Springs, 12 seasons (last appeared in 2003)

Longest active winning streak in district games: Cy Ranch, 19 (last loss: September 20, 2014 vs. Langham Creek)
Longest active losing streak in district games: Cy Lakes, 20 (last win: October 26, 2013 vs. Cy Creek)

I've seen the preseason rankings from Varsity Wires, Dave Campbell's Texas Football, Friday Night Football (from The Old Coach), and Adam Coleman from the Houston Chronicle. Power rankings sure have a way of eliciting strong reactions from people (Really, Adam? 8th?), so I wanted to try something a little different. Instead of ranking the teams 1-10, I will separate them into tiers. Yes, that's a little lazy, but I am doing this to take into account the chaotic nature of this district, which makes putting a solid ranking on these teams next to impossible. For all I know, Woods could win the district and finish the regular season unbeaten. They could finish 3-7, too.

Also, I'm sorry if any of this information is not accurate. This is strictly based off of what information I have gathered.

Teams to Beat

I'd say that Cy-Fair and Cy Ranch will be the top two teams in District 17-6A in 2016. These two teams will meet in late September, and the winner of this game will likely have the inside track to win the district.

Ranch and Fair are basically mirror images of each other; they will come in to each and every game looking to establish their supremacy in the trenches. Both have a stable of running backs at their disposal, both possess smashmouth defenses.... and both are in search of a starting quarterback.

Cy Ranch

No doubt, Cy Ranch has been the class of the district over the past two seasons. I could be bitter, but I never played against them. The Mustangs have transformed from an also-ran into one of the top programs in the city. Can they keep that momentum going?

On offense, they'll have to replace their talisman, Collin Rock, who is now at SMU. Austin Goffney, an old friend, has been their #1 during 7-on-7 season, and he should be the favorite to start heading into the actual season. The tandem of R.J. Sneed and Keric Wheatfall will give opposing secondaries nightmares. Sneed is one of the top recruits in the country, but Wheatfall is a fine player in his own right. E.J. Thompson and Holden Gourley is a solid duo at running back; Thompson is probably one of the most underrated players in the district. Cole Blanton, Alex Dulevitz, and Samir Martula headline what is probably the district's best offensive line.

Ranch's defense has a little rebuilding to do, but Harrison Loveless, Lawson Pyles, and Amaud Willis-Dalton give them three cornerstones to build around. Willis-Dalton is not just one of the top defensive players in the district; he is a legitimate all-around talent. Alex O'Connor emerged as a key contributor as a sophomore as the Mustangs continue to churn out quality talent at the linebacker spot. Demari Lewis and Noah Routh return to the Mustang secondary, and they'll be counted on to provide leadership to what may be a young unit.

Cy-Fair

With a playoff spot at stake, the Bobcats had to find a passing game quickly, and it turns out they're not too shabby when they have to throw the ball. But, their identity has, and always will be, a run-first team. Cam Arnold started the final two regular season games and their playoff game and performed rather well, so he'll be counted on to provide a little balance to that run-first tendency.

Trent Kennedy is the next in a long line of outstanding Cy-Fair running backs, and he should build upon a breakout 2015. B.J. Chambers may be a wide receiver playing in a run-oriented offense, but he's shown that he isn't just on the field to keep opposing defenses honest; he is a legtimate big-play threat for the Bobcats.

And then, there's Brock Wright. He is the #1 rated tight end in the country, and for good reason; he's probably one of the most complete players in the country. Brock has already drawn Rob Gronkowski comparisons (definitely not for the off-field antics) in the passing game. In the running game, he is essentially a sixth lineman for the Bobcats, and his athleticism gives him the advantage over opposing defensive linemen and linebackers. Speaking of linemen, the Bobcats feature one of the best in the country; Austin Deculus will be heading to LSU, and he'll enter his third season as the leader of the Bobcats' offensive line.

The Bobcats struggled to score points last season; only Cy Lakes scored fewer points in 2015. However, their defense remained true to form, even with significantly less star power than in previous years. This is a unit that, as a whole, is greater than the sum of its parts. The underclassmen who played key roles on the Cy-Fair defense are primed to make star turns in 2016. The two underclassmen of note... Jace Bobo and Erick Hallett. Both featured prominently on defense as sophomores, and Bobo wound up sharing the district's Defensive Newcomer of the Year award with Cy Ridge's D'Juan Matthews. Hallett will join forces with Kyle Cervenka and Dylan Higgins to form a solid secondary.

Cy Ranch and Cy-Fair may employ similar styles of play, but I feel that the Mustangs' athletes will give them the edge.

Two playoff spots left. Who wants 'em?

The battle for the final two playoff spots in District 17-6A should be the most compelling storyline in 2016. It's really a shame that only four teams can advance, because all of the schools in this tier are good enough to make the playoffs if they were in the other Houston-area districts.

Cy Ridge

The Rams have not gotten much love from the likes of Dave Campbell's Texas Football or Friday Night Football (from The Old Coach); both of those publications have them finishing 7th and 8th in the district, respectively. That's a rather large slight to a team that returns significant experience on both sides of the ball.

In 2014, Trelon Smith, Kevin LeDee, TyRae Thornton, and D'Juan Matthews were sophomores who played prominent roles in a season that turned out to be a youth movement for the Rams, and they experienced more than their fair share of growing pains as they sputtered to a 2-8 record, the worst in Cy Ridge's history.

Two years later, these seniors are primed for one final run. Smith is the district's reigning offensive MVP, Matthews is a reigning Defensive Newcomer of the Year and the anchor of Ridge's defensive line, Thornton has evolved into a shutdown cornerback, and LeDee, coming off a season where he was a 1st-team All-District selection at wide receiver, has established himself as the #1 option in the Rams' passing game. There's no doubt that the time is now for the Cypress Ridge Rams.

Cy Creek

Cy Creek ended their playoff drought in 2015. They do have to bring in a new quarterback for 2016; Mateo Renteria is getting the first opportunity to replace Luke Allen, but having the best collection of offensive skill players in the district coming back with reinforcements is definitely going to ease his transition into the starting role.

Miles Battle may already be the most sought-after football player in Cy Creek history. He may get the majority of the attention on offense, but Kaleb O'Bryant, Mason Biggers, and Caleb Horn are all fine players as well; they have the ability to hurt opponents with their elusiveness and versatility. Among the reinforcements, Geonardo Sutton is an intriguing newcomer; he might be a name to remember in the coming years. Jack Hook impressed as a late-season call-up, and he'll look to make an impact in his first full season as a varsity player.

Jacari Tatum and Jowell Aponte, two imposing presences in the trenches, will enter their third years as the leaders of a Cougar defense that brings back some experience in the front seven. As a sophomore, Derek Craft emerged as a top performer at linebacker, and he'll team up with Dakwa Davis and Pryce Pearson once again. LaDarius Anthony will be counted on to play an integral role on a secondary that will be retooling after the departures of Chance Steverson, Trevien Thomas, and Antoine Small, among others.

Cy Falls

The Eagles will have to replace a record-setting quarterback in Casey Rosellini and a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Shannon Vaughns and Desmond Hite. They will also have to replace their offensive coordinator, Greg Rogers; Coach Rogers departed to become the first head coach at Cy Park. T.J. Goodwin is regarded as an emerging talent, but there will definitely be an adjustment period for him. Christian Anderson will also play a starring role in the Eagle offense after featuring as a reserve in 2015. There's no shortage of speed on the offensive end for Cy Falls; that's never really been an issue for them.

A smash-mouth defense that returns players like Blake Thompson, Kory Tolliver, Addy Bikacic, Davion Morris, and Cordell Ijoma, will definitely be their strength and should keep them in games, especially early in the season as the new faces on offense get themselves acclimated.

Langham Creek

The Lobos will still feature an outstanding offense, but having to replace the duo of Paul Watson and Quartney Davis will be the top priority. Fortunately for them, Toneil Carter is back for one last run. One of the top recruits in the country, Carter will be the workhorse of the Lobo offense, and he'll have to really carry this team, especially early in the season.

To be perfectly honest, I know almost nothing about what Langham will be bringing back on defense, probably because most of their starters from last year are all gone. Their secondary should be a strength; Jordan Murray is an All-District performer, and he'll be joined by Noah McGee and Nicky Diep, among others, and Chidi Ogbonnaya will be one to watch on the defensive line.

Cy Woods

A playoff berth is not totally out of the realm of possiblity for the Wildcats. At Cy Woods, the cupboard is never bare, and they will always have quality talent.

However, the talent is much more unproven than in seasons past, especially when it comes to the offensive skill players. The Wildcats will have to break in a completely new group of wide receivers, with Jack Barrientez being the lone holdover. Jacob Kainer gained some experience as the backup quarterback last season and has recovered extremely well from a horrific leg injury he suffered last season. Jacob is the Wildcats' top prospect in the class of 2018, and now, it is time for him to put his skills on full display.

The Wildcats have a brand-new cast of characters, and that means that they have kids who are eager to make a name for themselves. Semaj Trahan and Jake Tesch are two highly-touted sophomores on the offensive side of the ball who will be making their debuts this season.

Cy Woods' struggles on defense have been well-documented, and ultimately, how far this team goes is going to depend on whether they make any strides on that side of the ball. Kason Franklin and Myles Wilson are three-year starters, and the onus is on them to provide senior leadership. Collin Fewox is an emerging junior, and he'll step in at safety with Kason. However, the question marks in the secondary lie at the cornerback spots; it has been a revolving door there over the past few seasons. Expect to see some kids like C.J. and Jack spending some time in the secondary this year. On the defensive line, Tobi Orundami has to take the next step in his development; he has massive upside, and he definitely looks the part, but he must become a key player for this defense.

Long shots, but don't sleep on them

Cy Springs

Explosive offense, questionable defense. That sounds familiar. The Panthers, as they are currently constructed on offense, is very reminiscent of Cy Woods during the Colton Huntsman era. Taye Barber is a legitimate star in this district, and he has two dangerous weapons out wide in O'Shae Clark and Jah'marea Sheread. If there's a team in the district that definitely has an undisputed QB1, it's Cy Springs. The question is, will a running back emerge to help ease the burden on Barber?

In addition, no team in the district allowed more points last season than the Panthers, who allowed 30 or more points in 7 of their 10 games. Unsurprisingly, they lost all 7 of those games. Jared Simon will be counted on to help facilitate a turnaround, and Marcus Royal, a standout on the offensive line, could be called upon to play defense as well.

There is no doubt that the culture of the Cy Springs football program has changed for the better. However, two straight 3-7 seasons following two seasons of improving win totals suggest that the momentum has stagnated somewhat. It is time for the Panthers to cash in on their prodigious upside. If they can find a solution to their defensive issues, Barber can propel this team into the playoffs.

Jersey Village

After two straight 5th-place finishes in 2013 and 2014, the Falcons limped to a tie for 8th in 2015. In order to end a playoff drought that began in 2007, they might have to do it with defense. With Deshun Qualls, Rokeem Paul, and Austin Lynch departing, the Falcons are facing a massive rebuild on offense. In addition, they lost their top running back, Anthony Ajao, who transferred. Alec Wechsler will get the first opportunity to assume the controls under center. ATH LaDevin Bledsoe and RB Jireh Thompson have been noted as potential impact skill players, and Chris Paul will serve as the leader of the offensive line.

The Falcon defense also regressed badly in 2015, but they bring back the likes of Emerald Blueitt, Jacob Clarkson, and Greyson Newton. This trio should serve as solid building blocks for a defense that will be counted on to keep them in games.

Should probably look ahead to 2017... and probably beyond

Cy Lakes

Yes, the Spartans should bring up the rear in this district again. But, as I've said countless times before, no opponent, especially in this district, should be taken lightly. Lakes may be at least a couple more years away from mounting a legitimate challenge for a playoff spot, but there just might be a team that is foolish enough to think that the Spartans will be a guaranteed win for them.

They have a few weapons on offense with Ansar Richardson, R.J. Breggs, and Nate Green. Colin King was plagued by injuries last season, but he'll return to the helm of the Spartan offense. Ted Solomon began the year as the starting quarterback, and he's someone who can do a little bit of everything on both sides of the ball. On defense, they return one of the best secondary players in the district in Brenden Lemon.

A competitive Cy Lakes team will be great for this district. I hope those kids continue to work hard and continue to trust the process their coaches have laid out, and continue to trust in each other to do their part in building their program.

And there you have it... my season preview, and my two cents on all ten teams in the district. Good luck to everyone involved: players, coaches, sports medicine staff, administrators, etc. Here's to another outstanding football season in 17-6A.

Looking Ahead to 2016

The road to the 2016 season for Cy Woods began when their game with Cy Springs ended on November 7. For the first time since 2012, and for only the 2nd time in 8 seasons, the Wildcats did not make the playoffs.

"When you lose, you get to do it all over again. Funny thing is... when you win, you get to do it all over again. That's sports. Renewal is guaranteed."

Considering how the Rockets have been so thoroughly underwhelming, and the Texans are... well, content with being on the treadmill of mediocrity, there isn't much to get amped up about in Houston sports. Spring Training is around the corner, though, so there's that.

Sorry, got off track there. What will the 2016 season have in store for Cy Woods?

On the returners

Bryson Powers, C.J. Jones, Kason Franklin, Myles Wilson, and Luis Reyes will enter their senior years as the veterans of this program, as they will be 3-year lettermen. During their time as Wildcat football players, these four guys have seen just about everything, and they have experienced almost every emotion on the spectrum: The ecstasy of making the playoffs and seeing a community rallying to support their teammates and them during a 3-deep run when they were sophomores. Then, as juniors, they endured the agony of missing out on those festivities while 4 rival schools reveled in the occasion at their expense. Now, as seniors, they will be expected to assume leadership roles as they look to make one last playoff run. I'm sure that they, along with the Class of 2017, would like one final playoff run to finish high school. Who knows where that run could take them... of course, they have to get there first.

Having their starting backfield back for one more run will be a huge boost for the Cats. Bryson returning under center will provide some much needed stability to a passing game that will be surrounded by uncertainty (see below).

Neil Chambers was probably the Wildcats' best linebacker in 2015. He showed an outstanding competitive streak and he has a mentality that sort of reminds me of Dominique Robertson, a linebacker who was a teammate of mine back in ancient times. I think Neil has the potential to become one of the district's best defensive players, and I expect that he'll make that leap forward in 2016.

For the returning lettermen, missing the playoffs left a bitter taste in their mouths. This isn't something that occurs on a regular basis at Cy Woods. Hope they do whatever it takes to ensure that it doesn't become the norm.

This program was built on four tenets: Character, Attitude, Trust, and Success. The offseason following a non-playoff season will definitely put the collective character of the returning players in the program to the test, and also raises a couple of burning questions; Do they have the right attitude in order right the ship, and do the kids trust each other to do their part in righting the ship?

Possible contributors in 2016?

My commitments precluded me from watching any sub-varsity games, so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Semaj Trahan (will be a sophomore in 2016) - Dynamic dual-threat quarterback, probably the Wildcats' top prospect in the Class of 2019

Cullen and Tanner Sherrill (sophomores) - Identical twin brothers, wide receivers; both possess excellent size and are also promising baseball players. They should be even stronger, and even better with an offseason under their belts.

Jake Tesch (sophomore) - Running back continuing a family legacy that began with Gary. Jake is built more like Taylor, his other older brother, but I've heard that he's the fastest of the three. Could make the move to wide receiver.

Khari Keaton (junior) - From what I have heard, he is probably the smartest kid in his class. He has played every skill position on offense, so he has upside as a utility player.

Brock Gunderson (sophomore) - Comes from a family of athletes (and giants, in general). His older brother, Cole, was a two-year starter at center for Cy Woods, so he has a great mentor to help him take on the rigors of varsity competition.

Jake and Brock both played in the season finale against Cy Springs, which gave them their first opportunities to audition for roles in 2016.

Issues that need addressing

1. The defense

Cy Woods' defense will probably never be confused for Katy's defense. Let's just get that out of the way. At the pace they were playing early in the season, they probably would have allowed over 500 points after giving up 455 a year before. The Wildcats ended up allowing 407 points in the 2015 season; among the 10 schools in District 17-6A, only Cy Lakes allowed more points. The Wildcats also allowed the most yards out of any team in the district. Most of that came through the air, where they were the absolute worst in that regard. Against the run, they ranked a paltry 7th.

The last two seasons for Cy Woods has been characterized by a conspicuous (and, at times, appalling) lack of defense. This surely has to be perplexing, especially because Coach Faith was a defensive coordinator prior to becoming the head coach at Cy Woods. I am very much interested in seeing how he will address the woes that have afflicted the Wildcat defense in the spring, and whether the changes (after allowing 400+ points 2 years in a row, there will definitely be changes) he has implemented in the offseason can effectively carry over once the season begins.

2. Wide receivers

With Tre' Hart, Jared Taylor, and Jordan Johnson all graduating, C.J. Jones is the top returning receiver for the Wildcats. In fact, only two players who caught a pass in the 2015 season for Cy Woods will be returning: C.J., and Jack Barrientez.

Jack is just one of two returning receivers for Cy Woods; the other, Matt Ficalora, was the only wide receiver who was called up during the season. Matt did not catch a pass, but he did score a rushing touchdown against Cy Lakes.

Basically, the Wildcats are going to be breaking in a completely new group of receivers in 2016, which will put the onus on some of these underclassmen to grow up in a hurry. However, Bryson Powers will be back to commandeer the offense, so his presence should provide a huge boost for the passing game. In addition, C.J. is a proven dual-threat out of the backfield, and he'll be a valuable target in the passing game, especially early on.

3. Starting slow/Falling behind early and often

The offense struggling to find its way during the first half of the season really exacerbated the deficiencies on the defensive side of the ball, and this basically meant that the Wildcats constantly had to trudge up a mountain that seemed to get bigger and bigger by the second. They were behind by double digits in the first half in each of their first 5 games, and they only came back to win one of those games (they trailed Ridge 21-7 after the 1st quarter of that game and ultimately won it 59-31).

So, what's the lesson here? Falling behind by multiple scores, especially in the first half, is not a desirable situation.

4. Discipline

Over the last two seasons (23 games total), Cy Woods has had 9 games in which they committed more than 10 penalties. I'm not sure how often that happened in the first 6 seasons, but I don't recall Woods ever getting penalized at such an alarming rate until now.

In the 2015 season, the Wildcats were penalized 107 times for 960 yards. I know there were some downright awful calls, but some of these penalties were completely avoidable, as well. I believe that both of those figures led the district, and those aren't the statistics where Cy Woods should be leading.

In their 74-73 loss to Jersey Village, they were whistled for 16 infractions, and they were flagged 13 times in a 40-35 loss to Cy Creek. This isn't an issue that has bugged them exclusively in losses; they've been flagged regularly, even in their wins. When they beat Langham, they were penalized 19 times. They also beat Cy Falls 48-47 in 2014 in spite of 19 penalties.

What's the root of this problem? This lack of discipline didn't just sprout overnight. I'm not going to expend energy pointing fingers at people behind a computer screen, because that's just petty and unnecessary. The Wildcats have won games in spite of penalties, but more often than not, flags have cost them dearly. Good teams find ways to overcome their miscues, but when they can't... the end result is usually pretty ugly.

On Realignment

Every two years, the UIL, which is the governing body for public high school athletics in the state of Texas, conducts a process called realignment.

If you want to delve deeper, here is a PDF direct from the UIL on how they will be conducting realignment. Even better... here is a primer provided by The Old Coach.

Given that Cy-Fair ISD is currently a district of 10 high schools, they will not have to be split between districts. Even though Cy Park is opening in 2016, this will not affect the composition of the district, as Park will be playing in Class 5A (2nd-largest classification) and won't have varsity football until 2018. However, when Park and high school #12 both have varsity sports, splitting the district will be required because of UIL regulations.

After much deliberation, the UIL has determined that:

The status quo is good enough for Cy-Fair ISD, as it will remain in District 17-6A and Region III for the next two years. Here are the 10 Cy-Fair ISD high schools, ranked by enrollment.
So... Woods' middle-of-the-pack ranking in terms of enrollment makes them a swing school for football. Given the helter-skelter nature of football this district, it is entirely possible for Woods to be in the Division I bracket, should they make the playoffs. It is also entirely possible for Woods to play in the Division II bracket, given that 3 of the 4 playoff teams in District 17-6A last year are larger than them.

In the playoffs (for all sports), Cy-Fair ISD will be paired up in bi-district with a new-look District 18, which is now occupied by Houston ISD schools. In the previous realignment, 18-6A was shared by Aldine and Spring Branch schools; they have now moved over to Region II. As a result, HISD, which was previously in District 20, has taken their place.

A matchup with Katy is still possible, because Katy ISD and Strake Jesuit remained in District 19. Taking HISD's place in District 20 is Fort Bend ISD.

Here are all 32 Class 6A districts straight from the source itself, the UIL: http://www.utexas.edu/uil/alignments/2016/FB-BB-6A-2016.pdf
