Diana's diamonds: William gives Kate his mother's favourite earrings

By Daily Mail Reporter

Prince William has given a pair of his mother's earrings to new wife Kate.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore the diamond and sapphire gems during the couple's official visit to Canada and America.

Kate, 29, had Diana's heavy studs remodelled into drop earrings and wore them for the first time when she watched Andy Murray from the Royal Box at Wimbledon last month.

Favourite: Kate wore the remodelled earrings on tour in Canada and Diana was regularly spotted wearing the jewellery

The earrings were thought to be among Diana's most precious jewels and she was spotted wearing them at dozens of events during the 1980s and 1990s.

A courtier told the Sunday Mirror: 'Now they're married William wanted her to have some of his mother's favourite pieces.'

It is not the first time the Duchess' style has been compared with the late Princess Diana's.

Comparisons: From the Duchess' wedding day commentators were already comparing the couple to Princess Diana and Prince Charles

Kate wore a similar outfit to that of Princess Diana when she visited Canada by donning a maple leaf hat.

Both sported red hats with white dresses during their official visits but Princess Diana made a slightly bolder statement by wearing a matching red scarf.

Crowds across the globe were eager to make comparisons as Diana and Charles made a similar tour in 1983.

The People's Princess: Diana devoted her time to charity work..

And Kate was seen to be equally interested in speaking to people on the official Canada tour, doing impromptu walkabouts

Princess Diana was the main attraction with thousands of people waved flags and shouted the slogan 'We Want Di'.

And Prince William's new wife was also a real crowd pleaser and her wardrobe had been one of the main topics of discussion.

The couple are currently deciding on a permanent London base, and are tipped to take Apartment 1a in Kensington Palace, a lavish 19-room suite that was once the home of the late Princess Margaret.

It was reported the couple also considered Apartments 8 and 9, the former marital home of Charles and Diana where William grew up, but Kate is said to have been uncomfortable with the idea.

'They have been to look around Margaret's apartment and like it very much,' said a source.

Grateful Kate and the handwritten Wimbledon thank you letter... with a spelling mistake

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Flashback: Kate Middleton in the Wimbledon crowd three years ago. There are rumours she will be back this year

As one would expect from the future Duchess of Cambridge, she had impeccable manners.

But unfortunately for the then Kate Middleton, a handwritten letter to the All England Club has revealed that spelling is not her strongest point.

Despite her public school and university education, her note thanking club officials for a visit in July 2008 contains two mistakes.

In the letter, just unveiled in Wimbledon’s museum, she writes quite instead of quiet and confuses ’till with ’til.

Kate, whose brother James suffers from dyslexia, is a former pupil at Marlborough College, whose current boarding fees are £29,000 a year, and went on to study at St Andrews University.

This is a rare example of her handwriting before she joined the Royal Family and had flunkeys to check, or even write, letters for her.

Oops: One of Kate Middleton's errors

In a two-page letter displayed in a glass cabinet, she wrote in looping script: ‘Dear Sir. Thank you for your kind hospitality at Wimbledon last week. My friend and I had such a fantastic time and it was great to be able to enjoy the day knowing that we could have a little peace and quite if things got a little too hectic.

‘It was a wonderfully relaxed day and we even spent part of it on the “Henman/Murray Hill”, which was great fun. I really was not expecting to be looked after with such hospitality and I certainly wasn’t expecting to see any of the Centre Court games.

‘I do hope the end of the tournament runs smoothly and this fantastic weather lasts ’till the end of the week.

Rumours: Kate Middleton may attend this year's tournament before going to Canada and the U.S. with Prince William

‘Thank you again for making it such a fun and easy visit.’

The note, whose address is covered by a strategically placed Union Jack flag, is signed off: ‘Best wishes, Catherine Middleton.’

It is believed the duchess was consulted and gave her permission for it to be revealed to the public – perhaps unaware of her errors.

Speculation is rife at SW19 that she will visit with her sister Pippa before leaving for her first official royal tour of Canada and the U.S. with Prince William.

Kate and William to take entourage of just SEVEN on tour to Canada and the U.S

By Daily Mail Reporter

-The Duke and Duchess' entourage will include Kate's hairdresser, James Pryce, but no 'dresser'
-William will give a number of speeches and addresses but his wife will not be speaking publicly
-The couple will be in Canada from June 30 to July 8 and will then spend two days in Los Angeles

Scroll down for the Royal Tour itinerary...

On duty: The Duke and Duchess will take just seven members of the royal household with them when they visit Canada and the US at the end of the month

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will have an entourage of just seven people for their tour of Canada and the US, St James's Palace said today.

Seven may seem like quite a lot of support for two people. But the entourage includes two press secretaries and a couple of private secretaries to ensure that royal protocol is followed.

Catherine - who is fast becoming a fashion icon - has broken with tradition by asking not asked to be accompanied by a dresser.

But she will be taking her hairdresser, James Pryce, to help style her look for the many engagements on her itinerary.

William and Catherine will fly out to North America with the small group of Royal Household staff to help them during the 11-day trip, which begins at the end of the month.

Royal officials said they have tried to keep the entourage as small as possible while still providing enough support for the Duchess, who will be making her first official overseas trip as a member of the monarchy.

Sunshine state: The Royal couple's Canadian tour will be followed by a three day trip to California this July

Outlining the reason for the US trip, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, their private secretary said: 'The visit will support the interests of the United Kingdom through the prism of the royal couple's interests.

'The Unites States' West Coast is a tremendously important market for British business.

'The Duke and Duchess will support UK technology investment as well as the creative industries through Bafta.

'They will highlight the bond between the US and UK's armed forces, particularly focusing now on the next step of re-integration of service men and women into civilian life once they have finished active service.'

The highlight of the US leg of the visit, details of which were released today, will be a glitzy Bafta black-tie reception where the Duke and Duchess will promote British creative talent from the worlds of film, television and video games.

From the royal couple's household will be Mr Lowther-Pinkerton, whose 10-year-old son, William, was one of the pageboys at the April wedding, Chris Keeley, assistant private secretary, Miguel Head, press secretary, and the Prince of Wales's press secretary, Patrick Harrison.

Sir David Manning, who is an adviser and aide to William and Kate, will be part of the team and a secretary will take up the final place.

But the Duchess will not have a lady-in-waiting, an official female companion, so the private secretaries are likely to take on some of the duties of this role such as collecting gifts or flowers.

Catherine will also be assisted by staff from the official buildings where she is staying.

Mr Lowther-Pinkerton said: 'The entourage is designed, whoever it is, according to requirements of the tour and we've just followed that principle really.

'In that, actually having done a pretty careful analysis, we've kept it as tight as we possibly can.

'But we've been minded of the fact (this is) the Duchess's first tour and she needs to be properly supported so she doesn't have to worry about stuff other than core matters.'

During the visit to North America, William will give a number of speeches and addresses but his wife will not be speaking publicly.

Mr Lowther-Pinkerton stressed the trip would be a double act, with the Duke and Duchess taking part in engagements together.

He said the Duchess had made 'incredible leaps and bounds' but 'there is a time and a place to introduce yourself to the world of speaking'.

Canadian officials are already gearing up for the visit.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said: 'Canadians hold the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in very high esteem and look forward to welcoming them as they embark on their first official Royal Tour as newlyweds.'

He told The Calgary Herald: 'The couple’s decision to visit Canada first is a testament to our country’s close relationship with the Crown and the Royal Family, and an opportunity for all Canadians to take pride in our traditions, history, and institutions.'

When a fuller-faced Kate followed in William's footsteps on identical trips to Chile

By Daily Mail Reporter

Teenage traveller: Kate Middleton during her trip to Patagonia in 2001, left, and looking elegant in London this week

Suntanned and a little full-faced, she looks somewhat different from the slender and elegant woman who will walk down the aisle next week.

The picture on the left shows a 19-year-old Kate Middleton unwittingly following in the footsteps of her future husband ten years ago. It was taken in northern Patagonia, Chile, as Kate took part in a Raleigh International adventure.

She and Prince William completed identical ten-week expeditions only months apart during their gap year. The trips brought them tantalisingly close to meeting a year before enrolling at St Andrews University.

William, then 18, joined the project from October to December 2000 after leaving Eton. Kate was studying Italian in Florence after completing A-levels, and took up her £2,650 place with Raleigh in January 2001.

Our picture was taken when Kate and others were helping build the foundations of a fire station in the village of La Tapera, chopping, sawing and hammering wood under a blazing sun.

Her instructor Malcolm Sutherland, who also accompanied William, described her as an ‘impressively strong and hard-working’ teenager who also taught English at a local school because she ‘clearly loved children’.

If she was interested in William, however, she did not show it. Mr Sutherland said that while others asked about the prince’s participation, Kate did not.

Watch out, Kate! Traveller Mary hopes to leave Miss Middleton in her big fat billowing wake on the eve of the Royal Wedding

By Daily Mail Reporter

What Royal Wedding? Irish traveller Mary hopes to match Kate Middleton and Prince William's big day with her lavish wedding gown and no expense spared ceremony

All eyes will be on Kate Middleton next Friday as she walks down the aisle at Westminster Abbey and finally marries her Prince.

But her dress will no doubt look positively plain to some people, particularly those in the gypsy community.

Because anything William and his bride-to-be can do, travellers Mary and Paddy are hoping to do better - and bigger and fatter.

Next Thursday night, Channel 4 will be airing a special one-off episode of its hit TV series My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, which it promises will be 'the biggest, fattest wedding of the year'.

And although all gypsy wedding are big and flamboyant and, in some case, rather garish, this time the families wanted to create the most lavish wedding possible with no expense spared.

Mary and Paddy got married last week but the big day was filmed for the special episode next week.

In true traveller style, Mary's dress is absolutely huge - and at 18ft long and 11ft wide, is broader than the antique ivory and taffeta lace gown that William's mother Princess Diana wore on her big day in 1981.

I hope it doesn't rain on my parade: Mary may not have millions of people lining the streets to wave at her carriage, but she will be travelling to her wedding in style

Centre of attention: Just like Miss Middleton, Mary will also have the TV cameras following her every move

And it was decorated with 40,000 individual crystals that turned the snow white gown into a huge glitterball.

And the 23-year-old - an age which is considered old for a gypsy bride - said all she wanted to be on her big day was like a member of royalty.

As she deliberated over how long her train should be, she said: 'I just want to feel like a princess.'

There's a bride in there somewhere: Mary shows off her 18ft long extravagant wedding dress

The gown was created by Thelma Madine, the Liverpool seamstress who has featured in the series as the number one dress maker for all the gypsy weddings, and had just three weeks to make it.

A source on the show told The Sun: 'Poor Thelma and her team were drowning in all this material and sewing on the crystals was painstaking work.

'Most people take months to get weddings sorted but they were under the tightest deadline imaginable.

'Mary was very keen to impress that she should look like a princess on her big day.

Finishing touches: Dressmaker Thelma Madine, left, and her staff help Mary with her final fitting

Your carriage awaits: Mary and Thelma pose for a photo before the bride heads off to marry her gypsy prince

'She spoke about Kate Middleton and how she wanted her wedding to be just as showy as she imagined Kate's would be.'

A spokesperson for Channel 4 said: 'Viewers will have front row seats to celebrate the wedding of the year.'

The show source added: 'It really was a dream come true for Mary. She and Paddy might not have the millions that Kate and Wills have at their disposal.

'But they made the best of what they had and it was a day that they will cherish for ever.'

Enjoying her last days of freedom: Kate Middleton skips along the King's Road like any normal 29-year-old

By Maysa Rawi

Taking it in her stride: Kate Middleton enjoys her last days of freedom shopping on Kings Road in London

With the sun on her back and the wind in her hair, Kate Middleton had a spring in her step on the King's Road in London today.

And why shouldn't she? The happiest day of her life is just nine days away, when she will finally marry the man of her dreams in front of adoring billions around the globe.

Looking as stylish as ever and rather slender (she wouldn't be the first to diet with wedding dress in mind), Kate appeared as a free as a bird and unencumbered by the trappings of a Queen in waiting.

Astonishingly, she appeared to only have two protection officers in sight - and one was so casually dressed he would have gone unnoticed but for the coat he was wearing on the hottest day of the year.

Miss Middleton will walk up the aisle at Westminster Abbey next Friday to marry heir to the throne Prince William.

She wore a £480 Issa short-sleeved black wrap dress and tan court kitten heels - which she was spotted wearing four years ago - accessorised with her 18-carat sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

The ring's precious stones make it worth £250,000, but the Queen-to be's version, which used to belong to Diana, is valued at £32million.

The glossy brunette popped into Whistles where she no doubt added more pieces to her wedding and honeymoon wardrobe.

The fashion chain refused to comment on Kate's purchases but the upmarket High Street store typically prices a dress between £100 and £300.

Low-key: Kate had little security, save two protection officers, as she enjoyed the London sunshine

Yesterday, the princess-in-waiting, who is renowned for her love of High Street fashion, was spotted shopping in Warehouse, a mid-market chain.

She arrived with a bodyguard and left with four size 8 dresses for £225.

It is thought she will be spending her honeymoon somewhere hot though reports have ranged from Scotland to the Middle East.

It has been confirmed the couple will spend their first night as husband and wife in Buckingham Palace.

Four dresses for £225: Is this Kate's High Street honeymoon wardrobe?

By Daily Mail Reporter

Creative: What Kate would look like in the £65 tropical bird print dress she bought at Warehouse

She may be able to afford haute couture, but yesterday Kate Middleton showed that she is just as happy in the High Street.

The Royal bride-to-be popped into the middle-market Warehouse shop on King’s Road, Chelsea, and spent a distinctly thrifty £225 on four summer fashion items.

She arrived with a bodyguard at 4.30pm yesterday and spent around 20 minutes in the shop. Shop staff said Kate’s outfits were a size 8. ‘She was really nice and friendly,’ said one assistant.

Eager to cash in, Warehouse’s PR team had put out a press release within an hour detailing her purchases and saying: ‘Kate Middleton has just popped into our King’s Road store and has picked up some amazing summer pieces!’

Her choices may indicate that she and Prince William are going somewhere hot for their honeymoon.

Royal aides have refused to reveal the couple’s destination, though they have confirmed that the couple will be leaving the day after their wedding and that William has taken two weeks' leave from the RAF.

Suggestions have ranged from the Caribbean to Africa and the Middle East.

It was confirmed yesterday that the newlyweds would spend their first night as a married couple at Buckingham Palace.

Warehouse targets fashion-led women aged 18-30. The firm describes its ideal customer as being ‘body confident and independent’ and says: ‘Warehouse is about attitude not age.’

Kate Middleton gets her very own coat of arms in time for Royal Wedding (and handily it can be used for the family business too)

By Richard Hartley-parkinson

Garter Principal King of Arms and Senior Herald in England, Thomas Woodcock unveils the new Coat of Arms for Kate Middleton's family

Kate Middleton today joined the ranks of nobility as her very own coat of arms was unveiled... and that could prove profitable for the family business.

The growing social status of the bride-to-be's parents has been reflected in the new insignia which will feature on the Royal Wedding souvenir programme.

In a canny move by her father, Michael Middleton, Kate's family will all be able to use the crest 'as he sees fit' including for their Party Pieces business as it was he who commissioned it.

The design released today incorporates an acorn sprig - one for each of the Middletons' three children - an idea suggested by Kate.

Kate Middleton's new coat of arms was unveiled yesterday, left, and it will appear on the back of the souvenir programme while William's will be on the front

The oak tree is a traditional symbol of England and strength, and is a feature of west Berkshire where the family have lived for more than 30 years.

At the centre of the coat of arms is an inverted 'v' or chevron coloured gold which represents Kate's mother Carole Middleton whose maiden name was Goldsmith.

Above and below this feature are white chevronels to symbolise peaks and mountains, reflecting the family's love of the Lake District and skiing.

But there are no references to the ancestors of the Middletons, made millionaires by their successful mail order business Party Pieces.

The forebears of Michael, an ex-flight dispatcher, feature successful Leeds solicitors, while his wife, a former air hostess, is descended from a long line of labourers, carpenters and Durham coal miners.

Herald painter Robert Parsons sketches the new Coat of Arms, unveiled today

The cover sheet of the souvenir Royal Wedding programme

The design can be used by the Middletons howsoever they wish and if someone else uses it they can sue them at the Court of Chivalry which, apart from a case in 1954, hasn't been convened since 1732.

Thomas Woodcock, Garter Principal King of Arms, from the College of Arms in the City of London, sat down with Kate's parents to create the design which cost £4,400.

He said: 'It's not compulsory but as their daughter is marrying into the Royal Family she will have a need probably to use a coat of arms.'

He added that Miss Middleton could have been granted her own heraldic design but her father commissioned the College in his name so all the family could use it.

Mr Woodcock added: 'The Middleton family particularly wanted acorns or oak and I think Catherine Middleton in particular was responsible for the idea of these oak sprigs.

'The idea is that great trees grow from small acorns and the part of Berkshire in which the Middletons brought up their children there are a great many oak trees so it's something they associate with the upbringing of their children.

'And in the centre you have what is known as a chevron and that has been made gold as Catherine Middleton's mother's maiden name was Goldsmith - so that's a suitable reference to her in the centre of the family.'

A version of the coat and arms which can only be used by Kate or her sister Pippa, as it denotes a Middleton spinster, will be printed on the back of the souvenir programme while William's will be on the front.

The booklet will include the wedding order of service and be available on the day of the nuptials.

Sketch: The coat of arms reflects many aspects of the life of the Middleton family

Three acorns: Kate came up with the idea to have her sister, Pippa, and brother, James reflected in the crest

Michael Middleton commissioned the crest, reportedly costing £4,400

Kate's heraldic design features a tied ribbon to show she is an unmarried woman and the overall shape is an elaborate lozenge - a shield would be used for Middleton men.

But Kate will only be able to use the coat of arms on letter headings and other items up until her wedding day on April 29.

Following the Westminster Abbey ceremony, the coat of arms of William and his fiancee will be combined - something known as 'impaled arms'.

Looking at the shield, the Prince's heraldic design will fill the left hand side and Kate's will be on the right.

Mr Woodcock added: 'With any new design of a coat of arms you have to make sure that the design is distinct not just in colour but in the linear appearance and as there is a 16th century coat of arms with a chevron between three sprigs of oak we've made the differences - dividing the background colours.'

Regent Street: One of the main shopping streets in London has had Union Jacks all the way along the road

The unveiling of the coat of arms is among the final preparations being made across the country ahead of the royal wedding

Security is tight around central London ahead of the big day with detailed searches being carried out along the route of the wedding procession

Red and blue were chosen as the Garter Principal knew Kate's coat of arms would have to be combined with William's, which feature the same shades, and the colours needed to complement each other.

Kate's brother James will be able to pass down the coat of arms to his children but Pippa, as a woman, will not but she can use it during her lifetime.

The formal legal document granting Mr Middleton his coat of arms is written on vellum parchment decorated by a herald painter with the text written by a scrivener.

Media queen: Kate Middleton is poised to overtake Princess Diana as the most talked-about woman in the world

By Daily Mail Reporter

-29-year-old is topping Internet and social network sites

-Diana remains the most popular woman online despite dying before Google and social media existed

Popular: Kate Middleton, who marries Prince William next week, is on the verge of overtaking Diana, Princess Of Wales as the world's most-talked about woman

With just 11 days to go before she walks down the aisle, royal bride-to-be Kate Middleton's profile is rocketing sky high.

The 29-year-old, who marries Prince William in Westminster Abbey on April 29, is on the verge of overtaking her fiancé's mother Diana, Princess Of Wales as the most-talked about woman in the world, according to researchers.

She is already posting Diana-type numbers in terms of news worthiness and celebrity status on top global media websites as well as the Internet and social media in general, the study said.

Paul JJ Payack, of Global Language Monitor in Texas, said: 'Kate Middleton is set to eclipse Princess Di as the media star of the royal family.

'In fact, Kate could surpass all Internet, social media, and global print and electronic media citations by the time the royal wedding-related stories are compiled.'

The study compared media citations of Miss Middleton with those of the late Diana, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince Harry and Camilla Parker Bowles.

For the leading global media, the citations were measured over the last three months, as well as all the archives available.

Mr Payack said Diana is cited in hundred of thousands of news stories, even though her death in a 1997 car crash came before Google, social media, and smartphones existed.

'The study demonstrates the enduring legacy of Princess Di some 14 years after her death,' he said.

William and his mother in 1991. Diana is still the most discussed woman on the planet despite dying in 1997, before the birth of Google and social media
Yet Kate's Internet and social media citations surpass every member of the royal family. Prince William comes in as a close second, followed by Diana.

In traditional print and electronic media, Prince William and his fiancée both enjoy double the references than Queen Elizabeth and quadruple those of Prince Charles.

EXCLUSIVE: Kate Middleton's wedding dress... as imagined by Mad Men designer Janie Bryant

By Deborah Arthurs

Figure-flattering: The dress by Mad Men designer Janie Bryant for Kate Middleton is an elegant creation in lace and silk. 'It's romantic and dramatic,' she says

It's set to be the event of the year. But as details of the royal wedding remain shrouded in secrecy, fashion followers and Royalists the world over can only guess at what is the most-discussed secret of all: what will Kate's dress look like?

If you're anything like Janie Bryant, the inspired women behind Mad Men's pneumatic Sixties styling, you won't wait to find out. For the designer has taken matters into her own hands and designed a wedding dress for the princess-to-be.

The ardent Kate Middleton fan took time out from creating costumes for the hit American drama to conjure up her own creation for Kate's big day, a majestic dress that will give Kate the ultra-feminine shape of the Mad Men stars we've come to admire.

Ms Bryant said: 'I envision something elegant, romantic, figure-flattering and dramatic. A combination of tradition, humility, beauty and romance with the freshness of white lace.'

The dress, says Ms Bryant, will be an elegant take on the traditional wedding gown, featuring classic elements but with a modern edge.

Bryant has given the gown a cathedral-length train, which at 7.5ft would be a good deal shorter than the25ft train of Princess Diana's dress.

The train would be created in embroidered silk duchess satin with 'yards and yards of knife-pleated organza around the hemline, beautiful silk bows embroidered at the corners, and more silk bows at the wrists,' she says.

Overhead cameras in Westminster Abbey and pictures taken from all angles demand detail, something which Bryant approaches with typical flourish.

As well as the bows at the train's edge, Bryant has placed oversized bows at the top of the train, where the fitted corset ends.

The view as Kate stands at the altar will be stunning, thanks not only to the bows, but also the wasp-waist of the corsetry and the intricately embroidered back.

The arms would be demurely dressed in lace, while the veil, like the train, would be cathedral length.

Bryant has inadvertently weighed in on the tiaras vs flowers debate currently waging in the Royal household.

Traditionalist Camilla Parker Bowles is said to hope the future princess will choose the more regal tiara.

Kate is said to be keen on less formal flowers, so would be pleased to note that Bryant has created the delicate headpiece out of white blooms.

The elaborate dress is suitably intricate, entirely appropriate for a royal bride - and with the slim silhouette of the top half, differs enough from Princess Diana's own wedding dress to avoid some of the inevitable comparison that will be drawn.

Bryant says: 'A dramatic look is essential, and this dress will have such impact. Kate is sure to make her own statement.

'Kate will be a beautiful and elegant bride. I can't wait for the big day.'
